I'll never be "cute" again....

A few weeks ago I got a haircut and asked the stylist to cut it short and make me look "cute". I told her I just didn't want an "old lady" hairstyle and a short, pixie cut used to always make me look cute. Well, she cut it short, but it didn't make me look cute. The truth is....at 62 I think I will give up on looking "cute".

There are plenty of other looks that are more age appropriate, but it's really hard to find one that I like as much as "cute". I guess I could shoot for elegant or classy or sporty ...... hey, how about "hippy"? No, not THAT kind of hippy, I've already got that look! But since I didn't do it in the 60's maybe I can do it now when I'm in MY 60's!

I could wear flowers in my hair and sandals and long skirts (from Coldwater Creek catalog), and maybe a vest with fringe? :) Hmmmm....I don't know if I could pull it off. I've always wanted to dress kind of "artsy", you know? That and "hippy" pretty much seem the same in my head. Either style seems to be good "cover" for my overweightness and that is my goal, even more than looking "cute"!

But here's the main problem (or SET of problems):
#1... I'm too old to look cute. Actually, around 80, a woman becomes "cute" again.
#2... I'm too heavy to look cute...unless you like roly-poly and think that's cute.
#3... I'm too short to wear long skirts with style.
#4... My hair is too short to wear flowers or a ponytail (cute) or a sophistocated do

See, it's just easier to let go of the idea of being cute and just let my "inner old lady" come out and play! I'll keep my hair short because it's SO easy to take care of and I'll wear whatever I can find in my closet that fits (since I've lost 25 lbs and will be losing more), and I'll forego having a "style" for now. But pretty soon I'll have to make a decision, I guess. What about you? Do you have a style? How did it develop? Let's hear it. And while you're at it, what kind of style do you imagine for me?

I was trying to upload a picture of my new "suitable, but not cute haircut", but for some reason Blogger won't let me. :( I'll try later. In the meantime, just know that I'm ok with not being cute, I just need a new look to strive for! I'll just leave you with this thought....if you can't be cute anymore, then be HAPPY!! PS: I got it!

  1. Your short hair looks darling on you! Love it!
I've always had long hair and love the different ways I can fix it. I collect hair accessories the way other women collect shoes and purses.

I've always been called cute since I'm tiny and petite and I've always hated it! I didn't want to be cute. I wanted to be pretty or sexy! Now, I accept the cute label and just let that be that. :)

  2. I so hear you about being cute again when you are 80 ! My Grandma is 91 and she is always being told she is so "cute" ! I don't think she wants to be cute at 91 lol ! When I turned 50 I let my natural hair color grow out after years of being a bottle blond. I had no problem with it, other than the white hair contrasted so badly with the darker brunette ! I did not achieve the frosted look that I wanted, it looked more like someone took several different sizes of paint brushes and did my hair with them. So I used a dark blonde and now the white is blending in with the other colors lol ! Now it is several different colors but lighter. I too am on a mission to lose weight, having several chronic illnesses makes it difficult but I keep on keeping on. My neck is my problem as I look like a football player ! So short hair on me, which is the way I used to wear my hair all the time, looks funny. So I went in and told my hairdresser that I wanted a piecey chopped style. My hair is very straight so it will just hang (not attractive if it is all one length) Now I have let it grow enough so i can clip it up cause I am always hot and sweaty. My style has changed I am more into flowy comfortable and sorta hippy, well my hips are plenty hippy but my style is well... eclectic to say the least ;-) I love your hair style it looks "cute" on you ;-) and as far as your clothing, try on different looks, pretty soon you will find one that fits you. I love Jamie Lee Curtis and her all black and white wardrobe. A couple of years ago I decided that I would only buy clothes that were blue, white, black, gray and pink. I have more blue and white tops and blue and black pants. I also wear leggings when it isn't hot. I wear long tops over them but I don't care if "fashion" dictates at my age if I can wear them or not ! I guess that is my core "Fashion be damned "! I will wear what I want and feel good about me.
sorry for this being so long, but your blog hit me in the right place today. Love love love your site and hugs to you !!

  5. We could be twins. I too opted for my old favorite pixie cut....only to look in the mirror and wonder "Who is that old lady wearing my hair?"

  6. Dee, at this point in our lives what is on the inside is the important thing. When you look in the mirror what do you see? Do you see an older woman who needs to loose some more weight with a non-cute haircut, or do you see a wise, knowledgeable, mature and beautiful woman? If you are happy with your inside person then the outside person has to be in that place also. Be happy with you because God made us all beautiful. We are our own worse enemy in the mirror. By the way - I think your haircut is great!!

Hi Dee, I keep my hair long because it's easier to put up in a ponytail or bun if I don't feel like fooling with it. I have given up on trying to find a style. Although I'm in my 60's, I feel like I'm in my 40's so it is such a dilemma to shop I just keep wearing what I have...Bottom line is, I'm happy with the way I look so that's all that matters to me. By the way congrats on your weight loss. Being healthy is what counts.

  9. Congrats on the weight loss. I need to lose that same amount. But today was Chocolate Day and I couldn't resist participating. *grin* I am very short and I wear long skirts and dresses because they are comfortable and I like them. My husband likes my hair long so presently it is longish, but I'm not sure how long I will be able to take it. LOL I guess my style is whatever I feel like wearing/looking at the moment. I am 57 and past caring what strangers think of my "look". I don't have to live with them. And fyi, I love your haircut. I think you're cute. ;-)

  10. I laughed out loud about your "cute" no more post. Boy, does that ring true. I am keeping my long hair (because it disguises the thin areas so well, and its easier for me to take care of, go figure.)

My sister Menopause Goddess Theresa and I used to wear long artsy, baggy linen clothes. Then we moved on to "classic".

We were just saying the other day, though, that it is definitely time to revisit those artsy, flowy clothes. We wouldn't look cute, but it seems that that is no longer a viable option anyway.

thanks for the laugh! (And I think your haircut looks great, BTW.)
